1. Create a new project

Find the project selection dropdown on the top left

Select "Create new project", then enter a unique name for your new project

2. Upload references

Drag and drop PDFs or .docx files directly from your file browser

Or use our upload manager

We extract and populate metadata automatically for all uploaded documents. However, our AI may not get everything right immediately. Please review the metadata and confirm that your metadata is indeed correct.

3. Import references using BibTeX

You can manually add a reference by providing its BibTeX entry

4. Browse and edit metadata

There are two ways you can edit the metadata of your references. You can select a single document and view/edit its metadata on "Properties" tab on the right sidebar

Or you can switch to "Grid view" and edit metadata the same way you would on a spreadsheet

If you would like to add additional metadata fields, you can select "Add or remove grid columns"

You can add or remove custom metadata columns here

If you would like to hide/show existing metadata columns, you can select "Columns"

5. Document viewer

To view the full-text of any selected document in our Document Viewer, go to the "Preview" tab on the right sidebar and select "Open document to current page". This method works in both "List view" and "Grid view"

Or, if you are in "List view", simply double click the document selection

A new tab should open containing the full-text of your document in our Document Viewer

6. Annotation - Create

Create annotation by opening a document in our Document Viewer and selecting the type of annotation

Select text or draw a bounding box around the annotation region, then provide an insight (optional) and select a color

After adding the annotation, you will be able to view it in the "Annotations" tab on the right sidebar. Clicking on the annotation in the sidebar will take you to its location within the document

7. Annotation - Browse

You can review all annotation associated with currently selected document on the "Annotations" tab in the right sidebar

You can review ALL annotations across ALL documents within the current project by going to the Project Annotations view

Selecting any annotation will update the "Preview" tab on the right sidebar to display its location in its parent document. Clicking the arrow at the bottom of each annotation card will expand it to show additional metadata and comments

You can also comment on the annotation. In the organization version of the app, your comments will be viewable by all your organization members. You can also @mention another user in your organization to alert them in the comment.

Tags listed on an annotation correspond to tags from its parent document

Share annotation with others within your organization by generating a unique URL for it; note that this URL is only viewable by members of your organization

Edit or delete tag using the context menu at the top right of each annotation

You can search for annotations using the search box on the navigation bar

8. Download and export references

You can download any full-text from your repository through the download dropdown menu

Note that in "List view", you can only select a single document at a time. If you would like to select multiple documents, please switch to "Grid view"

You can export all project references as BibTeX by selecting "Export BibTeX"

10. Tags

You can add/edit tags to documents by selecting it and navigating to "Properties" tab on the right sidebar

Clicking on the "+" icon allows you to edit tags manually

You can also add tags from the AI recommended list by clicking on them directly

You can also add tags by clicking the "+" icon (shows up on hover) directly on the reference item while in "List view"

You can change the color or edit the text of the tag by clicking on the color box next to the tag on the left sidebar

You can filter for documents with any tag by clicking the tag on the left sidebar

To delete a tag from a single document, click on the "+" icon under the "Properties" tab in the right sidebar, or the "+" icon (shows up on hover) directly on the reference item while in "List view" to bring up the "Edit document tags" popup dialog. Click on "x" next to the tag to delete it

If you would like to delete a tag from ALL documents currently housing that tag, you can do so on the left sidebar. Note that deleting tags is an irreversible process
